What is Indefinite Leave to Remain?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a form of permanent residency that allows you to live, work, and study in the UK without time restrictions. It’s the final step before applying for British citizenship.

Before proceeding with your application, there are a few conditions and requirements you must meet. If you meet the criteria, the Immigration team will guide you through the application process and assist with your application. If you don’t meet the criteria, we’ll help you explore your other options.

You may be eligible if you have:

  • Lived in the UK lawfully for 5 years on a qualifying visa (e.g. Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Family, etc.)
  • Lived in the UK for 10 years under the long residence route
  • Settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Refugee or humanitarian protection status after 5 years

To apply for ILR, you will need:

  • Proof of continuous lawful residence
  • Valid biometric residence permit (BRP) or digital eVisa
  • Evidence of English language proficiency; B1 English Test
